Program Title:
Lean Construction in Small Size Projects
Speaker:
Romano Nickerson may know more about designing ice skating rinks than any other healthcare architect in the world! He began his architectural career with a small firm in Minnesota that designed hockey arenas. Now a Principal with Boulder Associates, Romano focuses on ambulatory care, designing a wide spectrum of primary and specialty care clinical space and a full range of ancillary care services. He has also explored campus master planning and retail-based convenient care clinics. Romano is currently Principal-in-Charge of a $250 million, 80-bed replacement hospital in San Francisco.
A special, long-term relationship with a progressive healthcare client exposed Romano to concepts of the Toyota Production System and to lean project management. An early interest quickly grew into a passion for Romano as he began transforming concepts initially meant for the production of cars into principles that could be applied to the design environment. He has developed and implemented innovative systems for applying lean production controls to architectural practice and project management and has helped clients to begin and sustain their own lean transformation.
Abstract:
Those who study lean construction are frequently bombarded by testimony and examples from participants in mega projects, often leading to the misguided perception that lean can only be practiced on projects of a certain size or larger. However, this is not the case. Lean for Small Projects will demonstrate the successful application of lean tools, principles, and philosophy on multiple small projects ranging from $5,000 to $5,000,000.

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
